Solstice Energy rebrands from Tas Gas and successfully enters the retail electricity market in Tasmania

Project Background

The Project Lab was engaged to work with Tasmania’s leading natural gas retailer Tas Gas, to explore ways to deliver on its strategic growth ambitions. The initial phase was to test the idea of expanding the existing gas retail business into Tasmania’s electricity retail market.

The end-goal was to develop a business plan that could be delivered within 18-months after board approval. It would provide opportunities to leverage its strong presence in the energy market and expand its customer base. 

Challenge

Tas Gas Retail, Tasmania’s leading natural gas retailer, was exploring the opportunity to expand its retail footprint to supply electricity alongside its natural gas retail business. The Project Lab was engaged to provide commercial analysis and to coordinate the development of a business case which would support the submission of a Retail Licence Application to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

The retail licence application was successful, and the scope of work was expanded to include further project support that involved planning and executing staged work, ultimately resulting in the launch of a new corporate and retail brand, Solstice Energy.

Approach

The Project Lab was instrumental in supporting the rebrand to Solstice Energy, as well as overseeing the process to commence retailing electricity to the residential market from early 2024.

Generalist project management and technology-specific project management consultants worked to support the process and coordinate with additional capabilities such as:

  • change management 
  • business analysis 
  • customer journey mapping 
  • process mapping 
  • systems test management 
  • solution architecture
  • quality assurance

Once Solstice Energy was officially in-market, the project transitioned into a hypercare support phase. A dedicated resource was assigned to this function (alongside a specialist business analyst) and assisted in ensuring retail operations, sales and marketing, compliance, technology and finance received support as needed in this critical phase. Assistance was also provided to help manage the newly introduced platforms, engage with external vendors, as well as support with software enhancements.

The Project Lab is proud to have supported Solstice Energy’s ambitions through project management, business analysis and general consulting expertise. Together, we celebrated the successful launch of Solstice Energy. Specifically:
